Balder has acquired the Scandic Meilahti hotel property in Helsinki from LähiTapiola. The property, located at Tukholmankatu 2, is a 14-storey building completed in the early 1960s and originally developed as Auratalo for the insurance company Aura. Today, the property comprises 188 hotel rooms, two restaurant premises and a grocery store, with a total lettable area of some 10,000 m². The building was converted from office use into a hotel and retail property in 2015–2016.
Scandic serves as the main tenant, operating the hotel. HOK-Elanto leases the grocery store premises, where an S-market operates. Part of the hotel space is subleased by Scandic to HUS for use as a family and patient hotel. In addition, Restel operates a Burger King restaurant in the building as Scandic’s second subtenant.
Meilahti is located around three kilometres from Helsinki’s central business district and forms part of one of the city’s most significant hospital campuses, including Helsinki University Hospital. The Olympic Stadium and the Helsinki Ice Hall are situated within walking distance of the property. The area is well served by public transport, with several bus and tram lines providing direct connections to the city centre and other key districts.
